The Journalism Department seeks to give students as much real-world experience as possible. One way we do this is through reporting trips out of state and abroad. Last semester we were able to send Journalism students to Cuba where they attended the Cuban baseball game.
We are seeking donations to further student opportunities doing journalism and engagement with the community. Toward that end we are raising funds to help us develop a news publication focused on mental health issues. Mental health is poorly understood, and most professional newsrooms have not dedicated resources to understanding how mental illnesses affect area communities on a variety of levels.
Starting in the fall our journalism classrooms will become a training ground for coverage of mental health on campus, the region, and state. The project will draw on campus experts and professional journalists for assistance developing and editing content.
