The Office of Community Engagement seeks to connect faculty, staff, students and alumni with the surrounding New Britain and greater Hartford communities. Gifts made to the Office of Community Engagement will help support service learning and other community engagement initiatives that strengthen campus-community partnerships. Service learning is a teaching pedagogy which combines course content with solving real world problems.
Participation in such community engagement activities as service learning, internships, volunteering, and community-based research provides CCSU students with valuable career readiness skills and lifelong experiences that help them grow into globally aware and civically engaged members of our society.
Jumpstart, one of our on-going projects, is a national early education organization that recruits and trains college students to serve preschool children in low-income neighborhoods. Jumpstart Corps members dedicate 12 hours a week in local early childhood centers. CCSU volunteers work with a small group of children, helping them develop necessary language and literacy skills for long-term academic success.
We hope to launch a similar Americorps program which expands on the Jumpstart model and provides reading and math literacy with an emphasis on social, emotional development among elementary school-aged children.
