A Noble Service: Helping A Child Fall in Love with Reading

Literacy Center A Project of School of Education and Professional Studies

The CCSU Literacy Center annually provides over $150,000.00 worth of free tutoring to young struggling readers from the surrounding communities. For the past 35 years we have helped close to 10,000 Connecticut children improve their reading and writing. The Literacy Center is a free public service provided by the Department of Literacy, Elementary and Early Childhood Education at Central Connecticut State University. The department does not receive any funding for this service. Admission to the Literacy Center is based upon the child's need for intervention as reported by their school, and the number of available CCSU clinicians.

How can Your Giving help us fill a Critical Need at our CCSU Literacy Center?

A critical need we have here at the Literacy Center is an e-Book library; one that complements our traditional K-9 quality children and young adult literature. Our hope is to build an Audio-eBook library, that is comparable to our traditional books. Some of the children who attend our Literacy Center enjoy reading traditional books, but most young reluctant readers today would much rather use the technology of eBooks. The audio component of eBooks also provides tremendous motivation to all our struggling readers.
An Audio-eBook combines a reflowable text eBook with an audiobook, enabling advanced functions like synchronous highlighting and tap-to-play.

Our goal for 2016/17 is to purchase 100 eBooks.

Cost per eBook $6.99 to $15.99

Estimated cost for 100 eBooks $1500.
Estimated cost for 66 eBooks $1000.
Estimated cost for 33 eBooks $ 500.

It goes without saying, we appreciate any and all generous donations, $15.00 will purchase one quality eBook with audio capacity.
